FROM LOFTY PLACES

I have a friend who told me of a book she was reading recently.  It was written by a minister who was trying to work on his judgmental thinking.  You know those moments when we think harsh things of someone; maybe we've had a negative experience with a person, or maybe we've just "judged them by their cover" so to speak.  This minister LOVED ice cream sundaes.  So, he made a bargain with himself.  This man wanted to free himself of the chain of thinking less of; or harshly of people.  His bargain was for every day he did not judge another person he would reward himself with an ice cream sundae.  At first he was so excited to know he would be eating his way through many ice cream sundaes...oh the joy!  And, all the while he would be helping himself be free of judgments or harsh thoughts towards others.  At the writing of his book he reported that it had been two years since he had enjoyed an ice cream sundae.  It's tough folks!

Yes, we ALL have judged another person.  I'm convinced it is one of those regrettable human conditions.  I've done it; thought harshly of someone; judged someone.  I DO it from time to time.  I'm not proud of that behavior, so I've spent a lot of time recently in my head, on my knees to God, and have been actively working on ridding myself from that kind of thinking.  It is HARD sometimes!  It happens often without even realization that I've done it. I don't WANT to be burdened with a judgmental heart.  Even when I have been wronged.  It is not only damaging to my ability to truly be a servant of God, but it also keeps me from creative thought; which is paramount for an artist!  Judgment  fills space in our hearts with negative thoughts that could be best spent on good and Godly things. Philippians 4:8 "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things"


LOFTY:  Of imposing height.  Elevated in character, exalted. Affecting grandness; pompous.  Arrogant; haughty...

Come on folks; we are all in this life thing together.  We should be trying to help each other through the trials and tribulations of life.  Can you imagine being stranded on an island with a group of people and NOT wanting to work together to get back to the mainland?? Our goal as Christians is to live as God asked and to bring as many people as we can with us to heaven!  We can never NEVER help another person from a lofty place.  To be there for someone who has struggled in life the answer is to crawl down to whatever lonely place they might find themselves in and lift together from a sincere love in your heart.  Jesus did that for us in the most incredible way.  HE DIED on a cross; a horrible, cruel death...full of pain and taunts from those at his feet who were looking at Him from their lofty places.  Read the accounts at the end of Matthew, Mark, Luke or John...or if you are more visual watch "The Passion"...be reminded of the torture our Lord faced FOR US.  THAT is the example.  And I am shamed for failing my Lord when I sat from a lofty place above someone who may have needed my love so much.  I am grieved that I ever let another human down when they were struggling with life in some way.

 I'm not preaching to anyone from a lofty place; I'm begging others to understand how we can come across when we sound harsh or judgmental; when we sometimes think we are better than others because...oh, I don't know...because we made good choices in life...or we go to church all the time...or we have a feeling of safety in life and don't like dealing with those who have struggled and may be living consequences of choices that might not have been so productive.

I've been in some pretty low places in my life.  I live consequences of some of my choices that may not have been productive.  I also am a product of consequences from life.  I made a choice to feed my children instead of paying school loans I had incurred. I had to get deferment after deferment.  For a single mom who loved her children and needed to get a degree to support them, there were years when they were growing up when I had to choose between paying or feeding my little ones.  As life went on and jobs were difficult to come by, or I lost a job, I could not pay them for a time.  As a result my consequence is school loans so huge I will NEVER pay them off.  I am getting too old.  My old age will be spent with loans hanging over my head.  My life will never be free of debt.  There have been people who judged me for being "irresponsible".  It hurt me.  It didn't encourage me in any way.  It wasn't true.  Their judgments were unfounded and placed on me from their lofty place of wealth and a feeling of being better than because their lives were different.

In the reverse, I've also encountered people who loved me as I was.  People who spent their time with me brainstorming possibilities, giving me phone numbers of people who do things that I might be able to do, helping me with ideas.  There have been people who built me up by naming the qualities in me that they admired.  People who prayed for me and with me in my search for a way to pay those crazy loans.  I ask you, which group do you think were doing what God asked of His children?

Yes, getting down in the trenches with someone who is hurting and struggling is the way that God asked us to be.  It is His example.  It is the best way for us all to have our reward when we are all together again one day; where there will be only equality.

PS.  If reading these words makes you angry, re-read the part about the minister and the ice cream sundae's, or read how Jesus died and place your child on that cross..  It is a hard thing to humble yourself TO yourself.  We all have judged, we all have had our lofty moments, so no one is exempt.  Just some of us have struggled with it longer, and have come to the place where we see the damage, and we want to get in those trenches with someone who may need us down there.  I've been carried on someone's back before, and I want to be one who will carry someone on my back.

DEATH IS A PART OF THE CIRCLE OF LIFE...HOW A CHRISTIAN THINKS ON THESE THINGS


My father is dying. It has been a long journey in this passage for he and my mother. It has been a long journey for all of us who love him.  I have struggled with many emotions as I have been living this with all of my family and those who love us.  They have ranged from confusion to sadness to anger to fear to feeling guilty at any small feeling I might have...all the while working my way to acceptance and hopefully peace.  I am not there yet, but I have faith that I WILL get there.

I most often go to John 14:1-4 "Let not your hearts be troubled.  Believe in God; believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many rooms.  If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I WILL COME AGAIN AND WILL TAKE YOU TO MYSELF, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going"

This whole thing gives me comfort...The WAY spoken of here is to live as God has asked us to live...and to DO what God has asked us to do! We aren't going to be alone at all in death!!  Jesus will be right there...We as CHRISTIANS have a place right near Him!...THAT is my favorite passage for this thing we are going through...

These pathways, this journey has, for me, has my mind moving at breakneck speed sometimes.  Trying to understand facts, trying to give comfort to those in distress about it, trying to find comfort for myself if even for a moment through other activities, through sleep...but for me I wake every day with a heaviness of heart as we are still walking the steps of waiting and knowing the struggles of passing from life to going HOME. For me that has become my daily routine while I wait to hear that he has gone home.  I'm noticing my tears come more quickly and easily...not because I fear for him to go home, but because I want him to go home to have that perfect body free of this life and all that it has become for him, and I am HATING that he is stuck here in his struggles to move from this imperfect body to a perfect one. 

Last year I was waiting for the call about the birth of my first precious grandchild.  That waiting was exciting and happy, and a little nerve wracking as I always worried I wouldn't get there in time; worried that my daughter would need me and I wasn't there...but, mostly excitement. When I got THAT call (in the middle of the night as seems it always is), I stumbled around my room trying to get myself dressed and on the road to make that 9+ hour drive to her, and I was so excited...off I went, taking photos of everything as I wanted to remember the weather, the sky, the clouds on my journey to meet our new little someone.  A good day!  And OH, he is a joy, just hearing his little sounds as he plays with his mamma and seeing funny sweet photos of him give my heart a sense of joy...he truly has helped in this tough time for us...a new life of sweetness and exploration...I love him so much!

This year I am waiting for a call to come to put my father's earthly body to rest and learn to live a life here without him  in it.  I am aware of the stages of grief, and I am sure as we make that 11 hour drive to my mom and the family that I will be very aware of each one...what I am feeling, what I think will be next...grief that I will miss him here on this earth, and gladness that he has gone home before us (just like a dad to pave the way for his family), sadness that my mom has a new existence without him and she will miss him, knowledge that we all will be in this place one day, so desire to understand what is normal to be and do and feel...for me it has always been so, to try to learn from what I see those ahead of me going through...always learning and seeing and trying to understand.

Time is marching on, and I'm trying not to get in the way of it...trying to do and be what I need to for whomever may need whatever...whew...But in this crazy time I want to stop, I wish we could ALL stop and think about what is truly important in life...what is really the end game for all of us...I want everyone to be aware that EACH person has a right to grieve the way THEY GRIEVE, to not judge someone's life or process...to not feel anger that others don't do things the way they do...There is no judgment here...there is no place for it here...there should only be love and gentleness and support for each other...sigh...how I wish it!

BUT, we all fail in life...in the imperfect parts of life...we try, and we struggle, and sometimes we all say or do things we regret...What I've learned is that each person's pathway in life has its imperfections, has its sin, has its mistakes...NO ONE is without it...PLEASE be gentle in your thinking of one another, PLEASE understand we all try our best and sometimes find ourselves in places we wish we weren't in...and we struggle, and we cry out in our own ways...and we need things we may have passed by without understanding we need them...PLEASE BE GENTLE IN YOUR HEARTS for one another...because in the end the ONLY thing that matters is that in our hearts we tried to be right and do right...PLEASE be gentle in your thinking of someone who may have fallen by the side...PICK THEM UP like the good Samaritan did...LEAVE that kindness on the heart of one who struggles.  Life is short my friends...no one is immune to death...no one is immune to mistakes and failure and sorrow and regret...We are all in this life together, and our goal should be to stay connected so we can help each other go gently toward heaven!

So, for a Christian, death is merely the passage from this life (where we are not meant to stay) John 15:19 "The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I CHOSE you to come out of the world, so it hates you" Going HOME is our goal as Christians. We are to be happy for those faithful Christians who have gone home for their reward.  That should be the goal for everyone..But, while in this place of waiting and reflecting, be gentle with one another as grief is personal and every ONE has a right to go through it feeling secure that their way is ok

and finally...for today...read Ephesians 4:32 "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."  As we travel this together...remember we all need this of each other!

IN DEFENSE...


This post is going to be in defense of the audience at church.  How many sermons have you been in attendance at where the speaker/preacher goes on a bit or a LOT, or jokes about how people aren't listening or about how they should be happy to be there when he goes over, or how they are sleeping, texting, talking, etc during the sermon and how bad that is??  Well, I have a few things to say on the matter...(I feel a little like that kooky lady on Saturday Night Live that used to prattle on about a subject only to find out she had it a little wrong) (but, hang on a minute!!) :) (cuz I think the apple falls on both sides a little)

Recently I was in attendance at a church service where we had a visiting preacher.  He was a missionary.  He began his "sermon" by joking about how he was going to speak for 3 1/2 hours...and how if ANYONE got up and started to leave he was going to stop and ask them publicly why they were leaving...he sort of joked about it for a little bit. OK, I KNEW he was joking (Well, I THINK he was joking)...but it made me a little nervous about getting up and leaving for ANY reason; whether it was to go to the bathroom or get a drink, or find a pen...Yep, I'm one of those who have always felt I had to do what the person in authority was telling me to do...STILL...on occasion.  And, NO, he didn't go on for 3 1/2 hours, but I was a little nervous that he would go on for awhile...Was I a bad audience person because I didn't feel like sitting still for 3 1/2 hours and listening to his sermon?...hmmm...

SO, fast forward to another Sunday.  On THIS particular day we happened to have another visiting preacher; a young "ish" man going to our local preacher's school...I had some company with me...it was Mother's Day.  The sermon begins and everything is fine...it goes on...and still we are ok...it gets a little confusing...a little repetition (understand...he's learning)...ok...still with him...and then it begins to go long...long...long...my little person with us was getting fussy...needing to eat...my mother is home alone with my very ill father and is waiting for a call...I'm getting to the point where I'm concerned about things in life that need my immediate or soon attention...and still he goes on...the tension was mounting in me...I could FEEL the pressure of the day smothering me...needing me to do something...until I feel captured...and in need of escape...so, what crazy thing do I do...I mouth the words "Hurry Up"...OH NO!!!  What did I just DO???  What made it worse was the preacher was looking at me at JUST THAT MOMENT!!  Ouch!!  I felt horrified that I had done that...horrified that he SAW it...and THEN...he stopped...and said "I'm sorry, I just saw someone in the audience just mouth the words "hurry up" and it threw me off"...and then he went on with his sermon...I felt SO embarrassed...so bad...but STILL so under pressure to take care of my family and company with their immediate needs.  After the sermon was over we hopped up and were on our way out so the baby could eat and we could call my mother...and I felt someone grab my arm...Yep, it was the preacher who stopped me...He said "That was very discouraging"...and I apologized...I went on to explain that my father is dying, the baby needed to eat and my mom was alone on Mother's Day waiting for a call and I just snapped...I told him I was so sorry...something I had planned to do as soon as I took care of my little baby company and my mom...as soon as I could find him...but, he was there, so I did it then...and then we ran on out...

These events got me to thinking about things...YES, it was SO RUDE of me to have mouthed the words "Hurry Up" to a learning preacher...SO RUDE!!...It was...well, I can't say it enough...SO RUDE!!...however...I've been wondering since then about the times we have been chastised in church for not wanting to sit there for EVER to hear a long sermon...about the times we have been embarrassed in public for this or that (remember the post about the preacher answering my phone during a sermon?).  Does it make me a bad christian...does it make me love God less...?  I say no!!  It makes me a person living in the world with life happening, and death happening, and babies who don't know any better needing food...it makes me HUMAN...yes, I'm going to say it...HUMAN!  Just like the preachers who have a job to do to preach the word and help us along the path to understanding...I have a job to do in life.

I have read that the normal attention span of an adult is 20 minutes.  OK...I've read reports from studies that teach a presenter to build their programs in 20 minute increments.  Give the audience a break, change the activity...IF you want your audience to stay with you. I am a school teacher and I remember classes on just this subject.  For kids it is shorter...like 10 minutes...but the point is the same...change it up if you want to keep your audience's attention.  That is a study...a fact of life...part of the HUMAN condition.

The early church often met in homes and it could be a long event...BUT, it was scattered with singing, praying, eating...and hearing the word.  It was the way it was done then...partly as people walked a bit to get there I would assume...partly because of the times...eating together...activities around the hearing of the word...Even Jesus fed the 5,000 as they were hungry...OK...that is what they did...it is an example...AND, in the church we attend...we sing, we pray...we sometimes eat together...and there is a sermon that typically doesn't run long...so we are doing that...

I know you've noticed that I haven't included scripture in this commentary.  I could...ok, here's one...I Peter 1:22 "Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart"  Does that mean I don't love my brethren if I can't sit still for a couple of hours and listen, or that I don't love my brother who is preaching longer than my attention span?  NO...It doesn't mean he doesn't love me when he goes long either...I just think there should be a respect for our HUMAN condition...on both sides...and be careful when we expect one or the other to comply.  God made us free...it should be ok either way...OK, a weak point I admit, but a point none the less.

I just have a problem with being a captive audience.  I KNOW I could just get up and leave...and I should have that day the preacher went long and my family needed me...but I was also raised not to seem disrespectful...and for me that seems a little disrespectful...so I was sort of caught in the middle of my own feelings.  WHEW!

I love God, I DO, I pray constantly, I study to show myself approved, I work for my Heavenly Father in ways where my left hand doesn't know what my right hand is doing Matthew 6:3-4.  I do not forsake the assembly, I love my brethren.  I just can't sit still for long periods of time without loosing my focus...THAT DOESN'T MAKE ME WRONG OR BAD...it doesn't make anyone WRONG OR BAD.

So, in defense of the audience...we are HUMAN...we LOVE GOD or we wouldn't be there...WE JUST HAVE SCHEDULES and LIVES and RESPONSIBILITIES that encompass our duties as Christians and are part of living a Godly life.  When the church service is scheduled to last from THIS TIME to THAT TIME...we gladly put it in there...but DON'T make us captive audiences and expect that we will glean every intent you had with the spirit you want every time!

PS...I could have written a BUNCH more...included a LOT of references and proof text...but, this was going LONG, and I don't believe in captive audiences...tee hee...

ANGER GAMES

Feeling angry happens to ALL of us; it even happened to Jesus. (John 2: 13-17 when he chased the money lenders out of the temple) Anger in itself isn't a sin. Matthew 5:22 says "But I tell you the truth that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgement. Again, anyone who says to his brother "Raca" (I think that is like idiot) is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says "you fool" (I think this is cursing someone) will be in danger of the fire of hell." I KNOW...I'm sure you are thinking..."Saundra, you JUST SAID that anger is not a sin"...and I still think I'm on the right track, so hang in there for a second.  This passage in Matthew has been debated for EVER...some translations have "without a cause" after angry with his brother, but there is thinking that it was added later...and I don't think we need it...here's why...He seems to be referring to two separate outward expressions of anger...one gets you in trouble with the local justice system, and one gets you hell...WOW!...I don't know the original Greek for this term anger, but the passage says we will be SUBJECT to judgement...meaning it could happen...WHEN???...well, read on...WHEN YOU CALL YOUR BROTHER AN IDIOT OR CURSE HIM...that is ACTION associated with a feeling...THAT'S what makes it an offence.  It is the feelings of anger out of control that make it a sin...as I am reading this...AND coupled with Ephesians 4:26-27 "In your anger do not sin". Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and give the devil a foothold" it also says that we are in a state of anger, but it is the action that makes it a sin.  Anyhoo, that's how I'm reading this...anyone out there is always welcome to shed more light on the subject as we are all in this together!!

SO, I am reading that it only becomes sinful and wrong when we handle our anger incorrectly.  Have you ever sat and thought what makes you angry, and further, WHY you got angry?  

We feel angry when our sense of justice or right and wrong is attacked; or we perceive it has been attacked.(that may be the same thing...hmmmm)  It can be a reasonable sense of justice or our own skewed justice born from things we have stored too long without handling it. The feeling is not wrong...it is a built in warning system that something is not right somewhere...and that is a good thing!! It becomes wrong when we do something sinful as retaliation or too quick a reaction.  It then becomes a GAME.  You know the scenario...someone gets angry and they say something ugly, or DO something ugly either to someone else or ourselves. THEN the person you said or did something to retaliates or you hurt yourself in some way and have some consequences from it...and on it goes UNTIL you either loose everything you love (which could even be your life) or you decide you want to be still and listen to God (Psalm 46:10a...be still and know that I am God) and break that cycle or end the game.

I was in the grocery store one day talking on the phone.  I had stopped to listen carefully so was just standing in one place.  All of a sudden a big man bumped into me.  He walked a few steps and then turned and began yelling at me for making him bump into me.  He said a few choice words that I won't repeat and was yelling at the top of his voice!  I and everyone within earshot (which was EVERYBODY) just stopped and stared.  The only thing that came out of my mouth after the instinctive "sorry" was "Shame on you".  He continued to yell, but I just walked on.  Mostly from embarassement, for me and for him! And, it was a little scary.  I think this man had a bit of an anger issue...if we look at this the way we've been discussing it he had some issues that were unresolved so he reacted inappropriately.

I used to react from anger all the time.  I remember one time in a fight with my boyfriend on the phone and he said things that made me angry so I literally threw the phone across the room!  OK, the consequence was I had to buy a new phone, and I freaked out my boyfriend and had to work hard to apologize and change my reactions to show that my apology was sincere.  That was goofy!  What good did that do???  It is just a simple example of anger turned outward and how silly, wrong, and full of consequences it is!

In my last post I talked about how satan is a liar and how he can feed us lies about ourselves that destroy the beautiful person God created...or at least make us unrecognizable from His original creation.  THIS is the way we can find our true selves as God intended...by going back and examining WHEN we are triggered to an inappropriate reaction and asking God to help us see the difference between the lie and the truth He intended us to know and be.  Like I said in that post for ME I got a message early on that I had to be perfect. WOW that's an impossible task!  Through that lie I also adopted the idea that if others weren't perfect there was something wrong and somehow I had to fight to get it right...for THEM and ME. WOWIE  WOW WOW!!...The truth was that I don't need to be perfect, I can't be perfect as Jesus was the only one walking that was perfect and that God gives us His grace freely, and that covers the imperfect self! Ephesians 1:6 "So we praise God for the glorious grace He has poured out on us who belong to His dear Son." It doesn't mean that we have a free pass to do what we want and expect God's grace to cover it.  Our hearts are a big deal to God...are we living as He asked us to...are we looking to Him for answers in our lives...That is critical.  Proverbs 27:19 "As water reflects a face, so a man's heart reflects the man"and I Samuel 16:7b "The Lord does not look at the things man looks at.  Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart" 


James 1:19 "My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you"


Acting out in anger isn't the answer.  We've all done it I am sure...and we've all been so miserable in it, I am equally as sure...so it is our CHOICE to either stay in that anger game, or find out what is eating at our souls that makes us stuck, asking God to help us understand what HIS truth is about us, and moving forward.  Not always an easy task, but SO REWARDING when we see the awesomeness of God and how He can heal our hurts that get us stuck and help us find our way to a life free of those chains!!

SATAN IS A LIAR! (in case you hadn't heard)

John 8:44 "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire.  He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him.  When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies" Here Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees...some guys that had it all wrong...and who fought against Jesus...to the point of having Him killed.


Life is hard enough without ole evil guy getting in our way and making it harder.  I've been doing a lot of soul searching of late, and a lot of work to combat the evil lies that satan has told me over the years...Things like..."You have to be perfect", "You make bad decisions", "You are not smart", "You are alone"...Those lies came in the form of events that occurred to me that I have talked about in this blog, and things I was told by various people in my life...all lies.  For God made me and I am His and He would not tell me these things because He loves me and wants my good. Romans 8:28 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose" That is a promise...and God does not, can not lie.  Titus 1:2 "a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time" and Hebrews 6:18 "God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged." We CAN believe in God, He is our father, He loves us, He works for our good, and He does not lie.  WOW!  Great things to hold on to as we fight this life of lies and deceit. 

WHY does all this go on?  It's satan who wanders this earth looking for who he will devour. I Peter 5:8 " Be self-controlled and alert.  Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." He blew it and he is eternally damned and he wants to take everyone he can with him.  That is his nature. 

In order to do this he MUST be deceitful...he MUST lie and make us believe his lies...and in order to do that he has to be crafty and creative and it has to be believable...so he works in the lives of others who walk with him...he chips away at us day after day with whispers of lies and all manner of things to make us believe them so we will give up and destroy ourselves.  It is a scary thing.

BUT we have armor you know...Ephesians 6:11 "Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes." we have but to tell him to get away and he will flee...THAT is another promise from God...that is our defense!  James 4:7 "Submit yourselves, then, to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

We have all been chipped away at.  We've all been told lies in our lives.  For me the process was to go to each significant event in my life and pray that God help me to see what satan was trying to lie to me about and help me replace it with His truth about me.  It was a tough process...and I'm sure I'll revisit things from time to time as some new thing pops up, but I'll never allow myself to encapsulate all those lies together again without fighting against the devil and believing that God loves me and is always THERE!  

There IS NO life sentence unless I allow it.  There is only freedom!  Galatians 5:1 "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.  Stand FIRM, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery".  

Find that way that works for you to disavow the lies you've believed and find that freedom that is there for each one if we just live for Christ!!

HOW TO REALLY FORGIVE...AND WHY IT'S IMPORTANT!


For quite some time now I have dealt largely with the things that people have done to me over a course of time, and what the scriptures say. I'm sure over the course of these posts I've talked about forgiveness.  But, the whole time I've read these scriptures and written all these words I've held in my heart a knowledge that I haven't been able to  forgive some people...that leaves a hole in the WHOLE concept of being Christian, being a woman after God...doing what I've been asked to do.

Matthew 6:14 is an important reason why forgiveness is important for us to practice...:  "For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you." and Luke 6:36 tells us "Be merciful just as your Father is merciful" OK, yep, I want to be forgiven...sooooo  That's a biggie.  The concept is not just to be forgiven...it is for our well being, our hearts to stay soft and Godly...OK, so if I need to forgive BUT I am having difficulty...what else is there for me to understand?
Luke 6:38 "Give, and it will be given to you.  A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.  For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." WOW, there really IS something in there for me...tee hee...Is THAT why we should forgive??  Hmmm I'm sort of thinking that's not really the reason...I'm moving on, through this...follow me if you can follow my brain...:)

So, for me, when I have a decision to make between choices MY personality is to say the things I don't want and eventually I'll eliminate everything until I get to what I actually want...perhaps a long process, but I guess my brain works backwards...artist and all I guess...SOOOO Let's just look at this practically!  Here is a list of what I DON'T want when I DON'T forgive...

To feel like I have isolated myself from everyone...BECAUSE remember We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23 so, when I don't forgive it sort of seems like I think I am better than everyone else...and that gets me ALONE, ALL BY MYSELF...looking from my self imposed place of ALONENESS at the rest of the world moving along.

OK, I also DON'T want to have the poison of UN forgiveness in my heart because it feels bad to ME, it hovers over my life and I begin to feel depressed and I stay ANGRY and I am not who I know GOD made me to be...It shadows life...it can make me SICK...and then I'm STILL stuck looking out the window at life passing by...it makes me STUCK!  and not in a joyful place I'm here to tell you!!
I also know I don't want to be seen as an angry, vengeful, negative person, and that is what I would be if I get stuck without forgiveness in my heart...I want to be a light of positive in the world...so, if I can't do that when I have the cloud of UN forgiveness then I must BE A LIGHT...of joy, of example, of happiness in the face of trial, of FORGIVENESS...for ME to be a better person, for GOD, for me, FOR ALL THOSE OUT THERE WHO NEED TO BE FORGIVEN!
But you know what...there truly is more in forgiveness...it may help the OTHER person to think twice before they do something that is hurtful to someone else. Sometimes through the act of forgiviness it may help the other person to grow...the bible talks about heaping coals on their head...WHY would it be in there??  Well, it seems it might help them to feel a little remorse so they might be led to be a better person the next time around...   Romans 12:20 - "On the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him, if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.  In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head." hmmm... helping BOTH of us at the same time...ISN'T GOD AWESOME!!  

Here's a little thing I do when I need to forgive someone...It works best if I have known that person for awhile.  I imagine them as they have grown up, I usually know stories they have told me that impacted them...so, I imagine them going through those things in their life.  EVERYONE has had tragedy, EVERYONE has had trial and hurtful events.  When I can imagine them going through those things as a child or young person I can SEE why they may have become the way they have that led them to hurt me in some way...and THAT understanding helps me to forgive them...to see them not as a rolling force of evil in my life, but a flawed human that makes mistakes too. (remember Romans 3:23)  And, THAT understanding helps me to understand why Romans 12:20 is intended to help the other person to come around...
And, for those folks that I'm still stuck on, unable to feel forgiveness towards???  Yep, there's a couple out there...I have to allow myself to feel the grace that God gives me so freely.  He KNOWS my heart...He KNOWS I am trying to be what He wants me to be...He KNOWS I struggle with this...So, I remember that He gave me the gift of grace and I forgive MYSELF my failing and I trust that I WILL GET THERE eventually...because I WANT to. Read 2 Cor. 9:8 in several different translations and see if it doesn't make more sense WHY we need God's grace, and what it does for us!!...I like the way this version says it, but grace is the subject even though the words isn't there..."God can bless you with everything you need, and you will always have more than enough to do all kinds of good things for others"...THAT is a GIFT! And you know the awesome thing...GOD forgives you when you ask to be forgiven for not being able to forgive...WOW!!


There have been a couple of people of late that I have had such difficulty with in my heart for things from YEARS ago...(wow, the chains I've been carrying around!!)  Over time my hurt and resentment had grown big...so, I took a chance and reached out to that person.  I didn't say hurtful, ugly things from anger...I just told them how I felt, and why they had a part.  And you know...they told me they were SORRY...and asked what they could do to help make it better!!  THAT gave THEM the chance to make it right...THAT was important for THEM!  and...it cleared the way to forgiveness.  (It won't always happen like that, but when it does...WOW...the power of clearing the air in a Godly way!) God's plan is a perfect one...its we humans that make messes...And THAT is why I'm SO grateful for God's grace...that He gives out so FREELY!

PS...I hope those out there that I have hurt, unknowingly, (cuz I work actively on asking for forgiviness when I KNOW I've hurt someone) will come to me and give me a chance to be forgiven!!

PREPARE YOUR MIND...OR AT LEAST TRY!

John 4:23-24 says "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth"

OK...so we are to worship God in spirit and truth...what does that mean?  In light of the last post I wonder just what God expects of me in church when I am worshiping Him.  I'm having trouble with this because of things that have happened in that church...so I began to study just what it means and have come to the conclusion that:... 
1. Jesus was talking to the Samaritan woman at the well.  Samaritan's did not accept some of what was written...including the coming of the Messiah from the line of the Jews...they followed their own traditions and beliefs so their worship was not in truth.  We are to worship the way God wants and not follow the traditions of men...Psalm 33:4 "For the word of the Lord is right and true, He is faithful in all He does" and it is clearly shown by example and command just what is to be included in worship...at church...(I'm not saying we can't honor and communicate with God outside of the church gathering or worship...but this is a follow up to church services, thus the focus)...REMEMBER to always look at the context of a scripture...understand it and see if it applies...


 2. Worshiping in spirit is worship that is sincere and from the heart. 
Spirit is something that isn't seen...it is inside...SOOOO, if we are to worship the way God wants and we are to worship from the heart and sincerely...what do we do when there are heart problems that have not been resolved?  The simple answer is to fix the problems, but the truth of the matter is that does not always work the way we would like...Does that mean if our hearts are broken or if our mind is on other things that we are failing God?

When I ask this type of question my mind immediately goes to what God said of David AFTER David had Bathsheba's husband killed and took her for his own...have I said this before??  Well, it bears repeating...He called David a man after His own heart.  WHY?  It seems that the HEART has a lot to do with it...David had his heart for God...Acts 13: 22 talks about how God raised up different kings...and of David this was said..."I have found David the son of Jesse a man after My heart who will do all My will"  Psalm 16:2 David says... "You are my Lord, apart from you I have no good"...This was David's heart!  My heart is willing...BUT, my mind is weak...WOW, that is scripture...Romans 7:18


I was sitting in church one day...and my phone rang...(I was SO embarrassed and didn't know how to quickly silence it) I was sitting way up front and the preacher; who often preached in the aisle; came over to me and asked for my purse.  I gave it to him and he got my phone and answered it...RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SERVICE!! Well, it was my husband who had stayed home that day.  He began questioning him...asking him why he wasn't there when I was...the WHOLE church knew it was my husband.  The preacher was not trying to be mean...he was being funny.  I didn't think it was funny though when the entire congregation began to clap and laugh.  On the surface this may not seem like much, but to me (who was having a little difficulty in my relationship at the time) it was horrifying.  The action of the preacher was embarrassing but the mob mentality was devastating!  I told him how upset I was later and he graciously apologized in public the next Sunday...but what has stuck was the way the whole church just followed along without a thought (or seemingly so) to what it did.  To this day those things come to mind from time to time when I look around at the people sitting there...

During a ladies class one day I looked up to see someone had put up a bunch of pictures from events in the congregation in the past.  It would have been great except for the fact that there were a few photo's of me with my kids and my FIRST husband.  I was dating my current husband and going to church there together with him at the time.  Apart from the fact it was shocking, it seemed in bad taste.  I didn't plan on it, but seeing that made me feel like crying, so I got up quietly and left the room.  Some years later I found out that the woman who followed me out to see if I was OK and so kindly said she would quietly take care of it and take them down...actually went back in the room and said "She should just get over it".  This kind of ugliness was made a bit worse when they all agreed. MOB MENTALITY again. I suppose they didn't have the awkward moment as I didn't find out about it for years...sigh...for me it was the awkward moment as a woman came up to me and asked me if I had ever gone to the church I was going to...the lady who was there years ago...in that room...on that day.  WOW...beware your sins will find you out! Numbers 32:23...OK...it was talking about one particular sin, and we know that there are many sins in secret...but, still that scripture always comes to mind when I find things out that have been done behind my back...

So, with these events and things popping to mind from time to time I have a hard time worshiping in spirit and in truth when I'm there...but, if I understand correctly God looks at the heart...and my heart surely WANTS to do the right thing!

On MOB MENTALITY...read Exodus 23 sometime...it isn't something God holds in high favor for sure!!

And on we go...trying, trying, trying still...hoping ever and always to do God's will!!
